There is a great deal of
activity in the air regarding Vancouver ISH 2010 and it great to see that
already, Australians are well represented in terms of abstracts accepted and
registrants. The High Blood Pressure Research Foundation has again come very
generously to the party and provided support for 11 of our young stars
presenting in Vancouver with Travel Awards of between $2500 and $3000. I’m
sure that these will be most welcome, not only by the awardees, but also by
their supervisors! Lots of exciting things will be happening around the
Vancouver meeting including an Australian-Canadian Investigator-Led Satellite
meeting in Whistler (you’ll find details elsewhere in e-News) and of course
our famous Aussie Dinner that we shall be holding on the waterfront in
Vancouver. More details will follow about this great get-together soon. |

Student
Liaison News from Ann Goodchild

Fantastic news for our student symposium
in December! David Harrison who is the Bernard Marcus Professor of Medicine
at Emory University in the US and has an amazing publication and citation
record will be participating in the student symposium offering his views on
“overseas post doctoral positions: a view from the other side”. We would also like your opinion on
what topics you would to be included in the student symposium. Would you like
a hear about § NHMRC interviews for fellowships? § how to apply for an NHMRC grant- what is a “new investigator” really? § overseas post docs: are they necessary? § How to better manage your time? We will be sending out a very simple
survey to determine your preference to these and other options in a couple of
weeks. If you do not want to wait for this survey feel free to email me your suggestion or idea. As the student judging of posters with
a senior mentor has been so popular this event will return at the meeting in
December. Further ideas to improve or embellish this event or the suggestion
of others would be highly regarded. Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research2011 ISH
VISITING POSTDOCTORAL AWARD The ISH Visiting Postdoctoral Award

An enterprising student –
Melodie Shiue, recently approached the HBPRCA regarding her thesis project, I
am researching on how stroke and cardiac attacks can be intervened by means
of a product concept; targeted at parous women above the age of 35. This wearable product could possibly
monitor blood pressure or pulse wave velocity continuously; while the data is
stored and wirelessly sent to the user's doctor. Simultaneously the device
can also detect when blood flow is blocked (i.e. stroke / heart attack
occurs) and alerts the nearest hospital for
immediate clinical aid. If you are interested in collaborating with
Melodie, … read more |
